Each corner of Sri Lanka has its own best season. Match your destination to the weather.
Sri Lanka's geography means monsoon season isn't one thing—it's regional. The south coast gets different weather than the north; the highlands have their own microclimate. March is spring elsewhere, but in Sri Lanka it's about understanding which zone is dry and which is damp. Knowing these seasons isn't just about dodging rain—it's about catching each region when it's genuinely at its best.
West and South: December to April
Colombo, Galle, Mirissa, and the southern coast shine from December through March—warm, dry, and busy. This is peak season; book ahead. April can still work but rains increase. The west coast (Negombo, Bentota) follows the same pattern.
East and North: May to September
Arugam Bay, Trincomalee, and the northern peninsula are dry and quieter May through September. Locals and budget travellers know this secret. Avoid December–April when the east monsoon roughs up the ocean.
Highlands (Nuwara Eliya, Kandy): Year-round
The central highlands are cool always, but best January–March. September–October can be wet. The advantage: you're less affected by coastal monsoons and temperatures are always mild.
