Whale watching in Mirissa: when, where, and how to see them

Mirissa, a sleepy fishing village on Sri Lanka's south coast, is the gateway to one of the world's most reliable blue whale sightings. Between November and April, these gentle giants migrate through these waters, and a dawn boat trip gives you a real chance of seeing them.

Trips leave at 5:30 or 6:00 AM and return by 9:00 or 10:00 AM—early, yes, but timed to catch whales feeding in calm morning waters. Success rates vary, but sightings are common enough that operators often offer a discount on your next trip if you don't see whales (a sign of confidence).
