Travel Insurance Basics: Why Every International Trip Needs It

Travellers Team·15 April 20263 min read

Understand travel insurance essentials and why skipping it puts your trip at financial risk.

Travel insurance isn't glamorous, but it's genuinely essential. It covers medical emergencies abroad (which can cost thousands without insurance), trip cancellations, lost luggage, and other disruptions. Most travellers think they won't need it—until they do. A sudden illness or flight cancellation can easily cost more than insurance would have saved, turning a minor inconvenience into a major financial disaster.

What Good Travel Insurance Covers

  • Medical emergencies: doctor visits, hospital care, emergency evacuation if seriously ill
  • Trip cancellation: refunds if you cancel for covered reasons (illness, family emergency)
  • Lost or delayed luggage: compensation and emergency replacement clothing/essentials
  • Flight delays: reimbursement after extended delays (usually 12+ hours)
  • Personal liability: if you accidentally damage property or injure someone abroad

When choosing insurance, read the fine print: some policies exclude pre-existing conditions, adventure activities, or high-risk countries, so verify coverage matches your trip. Cheaper policies often have lower maximum payouts or higher excess fees. Family or annual multi-trip policies can be better value than buying per-trip. Buy insurance within a few days of booking your flights (if you cancel later, you'll be covered). It's a small cost that protects your entire investment—genuinely peace of mind money.
