Thailand essentials: culture, seasons, and must-see regions for Sri Lankans

Thailand is Sri Lanka's most popular regional destination—close, affordable, accessible, and endlessly varied. Whether you're seeking beaches, ancient temples, bustling cities, or mountain landscapes, Thailand delivers. But "going to Thailand" means very different experiences depending on which region you visit and when, so a little planning makes a huge difference in your satisfaction.

Bangkok is the inevitable first stop for most: chaotic, energetic, packed with temples, street food, and markets. Spend 2-3 days there, explore the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, eat your way through street stalls, and visit the floating markets at dawn. Then get out and explore regions. The islands—Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan—offer beaches and water activities but are tourist-heavy and pricey. Chiang Mai in the north offers a slower pace, temples, nature treks, and elephant sanctuaries. Each region has its character; don't try to see it all in one trip. Pick one or two regions and go deeper rather than shallow.

Seasons matter. The dry season (November to February) is most comfortable and busiest—expect crowds and higher prices. The hot season (March to May) is intensely hot but quieter and cheaper. The rainy season (May to October) brings green landscapes and fewer tourists, with manageable rains in most regions. Many travellers avoid rainy season, but it's a solid time to visit if you don't mind occasional showers and enjoy landscapes at their most lush.

Visas: many nationalities, including Sri Lankans, get 30 days visa-free on arrival or can extend. For longer stays, a tourist visa is straightforward. Accommodation ranges from luxury resorts to budget hostels. Thai food is fantastic, massage is cheap and excellent, and the Thai people are generally warm and welcoming. Start with Bangkok and one other region—perhaps Chiang Mai or an island—and go deeper on a return trip.
