SriLankan Airlines Privatisation Cancelled: What Happens Next?

Travellers Team·29 June 20242 min read

The Cabinet terminated the bidding process on 9 July 2024 and chose internal restructuring instead.

In a significant decision, Sri Lanka's Cabinet of Ministers terminated the bidding process for privatising SriLankan Airlines on 9 July 2024. This came after the government had shortlisted three potential investors who seemed serious about acquiring a stake in the national carrier. However, the Cabinet concluded that none of the bids met the government's standards and requirements.

Instead of pursuing privatisation further, the government announced it will restructure SriLankan Airlines internally. This means the airline will remain state-owned and will focus on operational improvements and financial recovery without bringing in a strategic foreign investor. It's a shift in direction, but not a crisis—it reflects the government's view that the right partner simply wasn't found at this time.

For travellers, this is stability news. SriLankan Airlines continues as your national carrier, and the focus now shifts to improving operations, service quality, and network planning from within. Internal restructuring can take time, but it allows the airline to chart its own course. Keep flying with confidence—the airline remains committed to connecting Sri Lanka to the world.
