SriLankan Airlines' Numbers Slid, But Tourism Recovery Is Real

Travellers Team·23 October 20242 min read

Despite record tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka, SriLankan Airlines reported a loss in October 2024—a signal of deeper industry pressures.

SriLankan Airlines reported a loss of roughly Rs. 1,960 million for the seven months to October 2024, a sharp reversal from a Rs. 4,133 million profit in the same period a year earlier. Passenger traffic revenue dropped 14.9% despite the airline increasing flights and capacity. The loss came even as Sri Lanka's inbound tourism posted record arrivals and recovery gains.

The disconnect is real: more tourists are arriving, but not necessarily on SriLankan. Competing airlines have expanded capacity to Colombo, and ticket prices have compressed—good for passengers, harder on the airline's margins. In response, the government later approved a Rs. 9.8 billion equity injection to stabilize the carrier's cash flow and support its fleet and operations.

For travellers, the takeaway is neutral to positive: competition means more flight options and competitive fares. SriLankan remains a viable choice for Colombo connections, and the government's backing suggests continuity. The real story is that tourism recovery is outpacing airline profits—a reminder that industry health and passenger experience don't always move in sync.
