Renewing your passport doesn't have to be stressful—here's what you need to know and do.
Your passport is your key to international travel, and keeping it current is essential if you plan to leave Sri Lanka. Renewing a passport might seem like an administrative hassle, but the process is straightforward if you know the steps and prepare your documents in advance.
The Renewal Process
Start by gathering your documents: your current passport, a National ID card, birth certificate, and two recent passport-sized photographs. You'll also need to fill out the passport application form, which you can get from the Department of Immigration and Emigration office in Colombo or online. If you've been married or changed your name, bring relevant certificates.
Visit the passport office in person—bring all your originals plus photocopies of key pages. Processing times vary; during peak travel seasons it can take several weeks, so apply well before your travel date. You can pay the fee at the office. Most passports are ready within 4–6 weeks, though express options may be available for an additional fee.
