Singapore Stopover Guide: Maximise Your Transit Time
Turn your Singapore layover into a mini-escape—practical tips for 6 to 24 hour stopovers.
A layover in Singapore doesn't have to mean sitting in the airport. With smart planning, even a 6–8 hour stopover offers time to leave the terminal, grab authentic food, and explore a bit. Singapore's excellent public transit, compact size, and efficiency make it one of the world's easiest layover cities to navigate. Whether you have a short connection or a longer overnight stop, there's something worthwhile to do.
How to Make the Most of Your Time
- 6–8 hours: Skip city exploration; use the airport's shopping, dining, and rest areas instead (luggage storage available)
- 12+ hours: Quick city visit is realistic—MRT (subway) from Changi Airport reaches central Singapore in 30 minutes
- Overnight stay: Book a budget hotel near Changi; you'll get sleep and a proper Singapore experience
- Food: Try hawker centres (incredibly cheap, authentic local food), or malls near Changi
- Must-see if you have time: Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay (sunset is stunning, many areas free)
Check your visa requirements beforehand—if you're not visa-free for Singapore, your short layover likely doesn't need a transit visa (check specifics for your nationality). Singapore is safe, walkable, and English-speaking, so it's easy to navigate independently. Changi Airport itself is clean and modern with decent food, free Wi-Fi, and lounges if you have lounge access. Most importantly, don't feel obligated to leave the airport if you're tired—a 6-hour nap is also a valid layover strategy. But if you do venture out, Singapore rewards the effort.
