Planning a trip to India: essential guidance for Sri Lankans

Travellers Team·7 June 20253 min read

India's diversity means different regions have different seasons, visa types, and practical considerations.

India is close, varied, and surprisingly accessible for Sri Lankan travellers, yet it rewards careful planning. The sheer scale of the country—from the Himalayas in the north to the tropical coasts of Kerala in the south—means that "going to India" means very different things depending on where you're headed and when.

Most Sri Lankans can obtain an e-visa, which simplifies logistics significantly. The application is straightforward and usually processes within days. Know your visa category, though: a tourist e-visa works for sightseeing and visiting friends, but not for paid work or extended stays. If you're travelling for other purposes, you may need a different visa type.

Seasons matter enormously in India. The north can be bitter cold in December through February, while southern regions remain warm year-round. The monsoon (June to September) transforms the landscape but makes travel unpredictable in many regions. November to March is generally the most comfortable window across most of India. Plan your route—and your visa—around both the seasons and the regions you want to experience.

Getting around within India is part of the adventure: trains are legendary, buses connect everywhere, and domestic flights are often cheaper than you'd expect. Once you're there, food diversity, regional cultures, and hospitality make each region feel distinct. Start with one or two key regions on your first visit rather than trying to cover the whole country.
