Planning a Trip Over Christmas and New Year: A Traveller's Checklist
The festive season brings travel crowds and higher fares. Here's how to plan smart.
December travel is beautiful but requires a different approach than your usual getaway. Prices climb, seats fill fast, and holiday schedules mean you'll be competing with school holidays and office closures worldwide. If you're thinking of escaping Sri Lanka during Christmas or ringing in the New Year abroad, starting your planning now—even in early January for the next cycle—gives you the best shot at good flight options and accommodation.
Book early and be flexible on dates
Festive season fares tend to spike hardest around the 20th December through 2nd January window. If you can fly a few days earlier or later, you'll often find calmer pricing and easier availability. Mid-week departures (Tuesday–Thursday) are gentler on the wallet than weekends. Book accommodation with flexible cancellation terms, and give yourself buffer days—holiday travel hiccups happen.
Prepare documents and check visas
Don't let visa troubles derail your festive plans. Check your passport expiry (many countries need six months validity) and apply for visas well ahead—processing can slow over the holidays. Confirm travel insurance covers your dates and destinations. Have copies of documents (digital and printed) and share your itinerary with someone at home. Borders can be busier, so arrive earlier than usual.
