Money Matters: Currency Tips for Travelling Abroad

Travellers Team·29 July 20243 min read

Smart financial planning makes travel smoother—here's how to manage money while abroad.

Managing money while travelling doesn't have to be stressful if you plan ahead. Whether you're using cash, cards, or a mix of both, smart decisions now mean fewer worries and better exchange rates later. Currency management is one of the practical skills of good travel.

Cash, Cards, and Currency Exchange

Carry some cash in the local currency, but not too much. Exchange some money before you leave Sri Lanka, or get cash from ATMs once you arrive—ATMs usually offer competitive rates. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas, but bring cash for small shops, street food vendors, and remote areas. Many travellers use a combination: a credit card for hotels and larger purchases, local cash for daily expenses.

Understand your card's foreign exchange fees before you travel. Some cards charge a percentage on international purchases; others don't. Contact your bank before leaving to let them know you're travelling—it helps prevent fraud alerts that might block your card abroad. Use ATMs from reputable banks rather than independent machines in touristy areas, which sometimes charge high fees.

  • Exchange some money before departure or use ATMs on arrival
  • Keep cash and cards in separate places
  • Tell your bank you're travelling to avoid fraud blocks
  • Avoid exchanging money at airports and tourist areas—rates are poor
  • Carry a small emergency stash of USD or EUR, which are widely accepted
