It's close to Sri Lanka, easy to navigate, and rewards both first-time and repeat visitors. Kuala Lumpur is the gateway for most travellers: modern, safe, and surprisingly livable. The Petronas Twin Towers and surrounding skyline are iconic, but dig deeper: visit the Batu Caves (a sprawling Hindu temple complex in limestone caves), explore the Islamic Arts Museum, eat phenomenal food in the Chinatown market. From KL, day trips reach the Batu Caves, Putrajaya (Malaysia's administrative capital), or Genting Highlands (a hill resort). Spend 2-3 days here before moving on.

George Town (Penang) and Malacca are colonial-era coastal towns with rich cultural heritage, walkable street food scenes, and beaches nearby. They move at a slower pace than KL and feel more intimate. Island hovers include Langkawi (beaches and resorts) and the Perhentian Islands (smaller, quieter, and excellent for diving or snorkeling). Each feels distinct; you could spend a whole trip on islands or combine them with city time.

Malaysian food blends Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences—the eating alone justifies a visit. Accommodation is affordable across categories.
