Decoding Airline Baggage Allowance: What You Can Actually Bring

Travellers Team·14 January 20253 min read

Every airline's baggage policy differs. Here's how to avoid oversized-bag fees at the gate.

Standing in the check-in queue wondering if your bag will fit? You're not alone. Baggage allowance confusion costs travellers time and money. Your airline ticket should show your included baggage, but the details—dimensions, weight limits, what counts as a "personal item"—vary wildly. Knowing the rules before you pack saves stress and cash.

Understand the three categories

Most airlines allow a personal item (small bag, backpack, or purse that fits under the seat), a carry-on bag (20–25kg, checked at the gate sometimes), and checked luggage (usually 23kg for economy, more for business). But some budget carriers charge for anything beyond a personal item. Full-service carriers in the Gulf and Asia typically give you checked luggage for free. Always check your specific airline's website before arriving at the airport—policies vary by route and fare class.

Measuring and packing smart

Dimension limits matter as much as weight. A bag that's technically under the weight limit can still be rejected if it's too bulky. Most airlines use 55×40×20cm for carry-on and 81×119×119cm for checked bags as a rough guide, but confirm yours. Roll your clothes, use packing cubes, and leave room for souvenirs. If you're buying expensive items abroad, budget for an extra checked bag—it's often cheaper than paying overage fees.
