Cabin Classes Explained: Economy, Business, and First Class Demystified

Travellers Team·19 March 20263 min read

Understand the real differences between cabin classes to choose what suits your journey and budget.

Cabin classes reflect far more than just seat pitch (the distance between rows). Economy is the most accessible option—you get a seat, meals, and baggage—and is perfectly fine for most trips. Business class, on long-haul routes, offers lie-flat beds, priority boarding, better meals, and larger baggage allowances, plus access to premium lounges. First class, available on select international carriers, adds ultra-luxury service and exclusive amenities, but is rare and extremely expensive.

What You Actually Get in Each Class

  • Economy: standard seating, meal service (varies by route/time), carry-on and checked baggage, basic entertainment
  • Business: lie-flat beds (on long-haul), premium dining, lounge access, priority boarding and baggage, larger carry-on limits
  • First class (where available): suite-like seating, personalized service, Michelin-style dining, maximum baggage, exclusive lounge access

For most travellers from Sri Lanka, economy works well for trips under 6 hours. Longer journeys—to Europe, Australia, or North America—make business class worth considering if your budget allows, since lie-flat sleep transforms the experience. First class is a luxury for specific occasions or if your budget genuinely permits. Remember: frequent-flyer miles can sometimes upgrade you to business at a fraction of the cash cost, so check your loyalty program balance before booking.
