Two monsoons, one small island — here's how to pick the perfect month for beaches, hill country and wildlife.
Sri Lanka is famously a year-round destination — but because the island has two opposing monsoons, the 'best' time depends entirely on where you want to go. Here's how to time it right.
December to March — the south & west coast
This is peak season for the golden beaches of the south (Galle, Mirissa, Unawatuna) and the cultural triangle. Skies are clear, seas are calm, and it's prime time for whale watching off Mirissa.
May to September — the east coast
When the southwest gets its rain, the east coast shines. Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Arugam Bay come alive — Arugam Bay in particular is one of Asia's great surf spots from May to October.
The hill country — anytime, really
Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella stay cool and green most of the year. Pack a layer: evenings at altitude get genuinely chilly.
Our rule of thumb: chase the dry coast. The island is small enough that you're rarely more than a few hours from sunshine.
