Bandaranaike Airport Terminal 2: What's Coming

Travellers Team·14 July 20242 min read

Construction of BIA's second terminal is set to resume with JICA backing, promising expanded capacity.

Sri Lanka's Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister announced in July 2024 that construction of Bandaranaike International Airport's second passenger terminal will resume shortly. The project is backed by JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) with a concessionary loan reported to be around Rs. 170 billion. This is significant investment in Sri Lanka's aviation infrastructure.

When completed, Terminal 2 is intended to raise Bandaranaike Airport's annual passenger capacity toward 16 million passengers. Currently, the main terminal handles the bulk of travellers moving through Colombo. A second terminal means shorter queues, more modern facilities, and better handling of peak travel periods. It's infrastructure built for growth.

For Sri Lankan travellers and the tourism industry, this is encouraging news. It signals confidence in the country's future as a travel hub and reflects investment in the systems that move people in and out of Sri Lanka. Construction phases will likely take time, but seeing a major airport project restart is a positive sign for the country's travel and tourism sector.
