Avurudu on the road: celebrating Sinhala and Tamil New Year as a traveler

Navigate Avurudu season with respect and joy: timing, traditions, and travel tips for April holidays.

Avurudu—the Sinhala and Tamil New Year—falls in mid-April and is a national celebration marked by family, ritual, food, and joy. If you're in Sri Lanka during this time, you're not just passing through; you're stepping into a cultural moment. Here's how to navigate it with grace.

The New Year coincides with the spring equinox, and celebrations last two weeks. You'll see homes decorated with mango leaves and oil lamps, makeshift swings strung up in courtyards, and long tables laden with traditional sweets and savouries. Many restaurants close or operate with limited hours as families gather. Hotels and guesthouses stay open, but booking well ahead is essential—Avurudu is high season. The energy is warm and inclusive; locals often invite travellers to join family meals. Saying 'Aluth Avuruddak Wewa' (Happy New Year in Sinhala) will earn smiles and invitations. Dress respectfully, especially in temple areas. Accept food offerings gracefully; refusing can seem rude.

  • Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead; Avurudu is busier than most holidays
  • Expect higher prices and limited restaurant availability; cook with your guesthouse or arrange meals in advance
  • Attend a temple ceremony or public Avurudu celebration if you're comfortable—you'll be welcomed
  • Small gifts (chocolates, fruit) for guesthouse owners or hosts are appreciated and often reciprocated with invitations
  • Avoid scheduling complex travel during Avurudu week; roads are busy and things move slowly—embrace it as part of the experience
