Arriving at Colombo Bandaranaike: Getting From Gate to City
Navigating CMB? Here's the unadorned reality: ATMs work, taxis are negotiable, and the airport's closer to the city than it looks.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) sits 35 km northeast of Colombo proper—about 45 minutes by car in normal traffic, a bit longer during peak hours. There are no surprises here, just straight decisions: airport-booked transport, Uber/Uber Tuk Tuk, or negotiated taxi. All three work; just decide based on your budget and how much energy you have after landing.
Getting Out and In
ATMs and money changers are in the arrivals hall—grab LKR here if you haven't already. Taxis quote in rupees; agree the rate before getting in (around 3,500–4,500 LKR to central Colombo is normal). Uber works if you've got data; some prefer pre-booked hotel pickups (often free or fixed-fee). The airport train station connects to Fort station downtown, but it's slow and luggage-awkward—useful if you're not in a hurry.
If you're connecting elsewhere, allow 3–4 hours for domestic flights and 2+ hours for international departures. Duty-free shopping is here, but prices mirror international standards. The airport has a lounge, decent food, and functional WiFi—nothing fancy, but functional. Grab a SIM if you need one (Dialog, Airtel, or Hutch booths in arrivals), or wait until the hotel.
