If you're planning your first safari, it's natural to wonder what to expect. The answer is: incredible wildlife, early mornings, and the thrill of encountering animals in their own territory.
What You'll See and When
Yala is famous for its leopard population—more per square kilometre than almost anywhere else on Earth. You might also see elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, sambar, and over 200 bird species. But sightings depend on timing, weather, and a bit of luck. Game drives start early—often before sunrise—when animals are most active and temperatures are cooler. Your safari guide is everything; a good guide knows where to look and reads the landscape like a book.
Bring binoculars, a good camera with a zoom lens if you have one, sun protection, and patience. Wear neutral colours—khaki or earth tones blend in better than bright clothes. The landscape is dry and rugged, with rocky outcrops and scrub forest. Bring plenty of water and snacks; it's a long morning in the sun.
