2024 by the Numbers: Sri Lanka's Tourism Year in Review

Travellers Team·23 December 20242 min read

2024 closed with 2,053,465 tourists, up 38% on 2023—the post-crisis recovery is building real momentum.

Sri Lanka's tourism sector closed 2024 with 2,053,465 visitor arrivals, a 38.07% increase over 2023 and about 88% of the country's pre-crisis 2018 peak of 2.33 million. January 2024 alone posted the year's steepest growth rate at 103% year-on-year, suggesting that the recovery momentum accelerated strongly out of the gate. India remains the largest source market, followed by Russia and European nations.

The recovery is uneven but building. The government's free 30-day visa pilot for 35 nations (launched in October) and the reactivation of the online ETA system (September) signal deliberate policy moves to accelerate arrival numbers. Airlines expanded capacity; hotels added rooms. The infrastructure is catching up to demand.

For Sri Lankans planning to travel—or to hire guides, drivers, and hospitality workers—the momentum is material. More tourists means more jobs, more services, more flight options, and more airline competition (good for ticket prices). The 2025 outlook is optimistic; if the trend holds, 2025 could see the island approach or exceed 2.3 million arrivals, closing the gap to 2018 levels.
